In addition to many local performances and collaborations, the following are some notable developments, performances, and honors since the choir’s founding: 

2007-2008

 

  • Choir joins Charlotte Symphony for 5th appearance in Magic of Christmas

  • Choir members join Carolina Voices for Singing Christmas Tree

  • Choir members join Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for a Celebration of Martin Luther King Day

  • Concert Choir is feature choir at the ACDA Southern Division Convention in Louisville, KY

  • Choir join with the community at Meet the Composer; Bob Chilcott

  • Choir members join Charlotte Symphony in Carmina Burana

  • Descant & Treble Choirs tour Tennessee and perform in Dollywood

  • Concert & Lyric Choirs Tour Washington, DC & NY, NY; performing at the National Cathedral & St. Patrick’s Cathedral

  • 16th Annual Celebration in Song Summer Festival Camp with guest composer Tom Shelton

2006 – 2007

  • National Public Radio’s From the Top broadcast features the Concert Choir

  • Choir joins the Charlotte Symphony for their fourth appearance in The Magic of Christmas

  • Choir members appear in Opera Carolina’s production of I Pagliacci

  • Youth ensembles tours England

  • Choir attends Appalachian Young Voices Festival

2005 – 2006

  • Membership increases to 270

  • Choir performs in Honolulu, Hawaii as part of Pacific Rim International Children’s Choir Festival

  • Choir sings for the Organization of American Kodaly Educators

  • Holiday concert features collaboration with the Canadian Brass

2004 – 2005

  • Enrollment rises to 250 singers

  • Choir introduces preparatory choir in University area – University Descant Choir

  • Choir debuts at Carnegie Hall as the featured choir at the National Children’s Choir Festival

  • Singers from two states sharpen their skills at a vocal workshop for high school girls

  • Choir tours Ireland

2003 – 2004

  • Membership climbs to 245 singers in seven choirs

  • Cantare sings for state music educators convention

  • Choir joins the Charlotte Symphony for their third appearance in The Magic of Christmas

  • Choir members appear in Opera Carolina’s production of La Boheme

  • Choir takes part in Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC

  • Group tours Seattle, Washington and Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia

2002 – 2003

  • Participation grows to 230

  • Cantare, the ensemble for changed male voices, premiers

  • Choir participates in Charlotte Symphony performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Britten’s War Requiem

  • Choir appears in the New Orleans Crescent City Choral Festival

  • Choir appears with Charlotte Symphony & Oratorio Singers in Carmina Burana

  • Choir appears in North Carolina Dance Theater’s production of Carmen

2001 – 2002

  • Choir membership exceeds 200

  • First Voices concert, demonstrating works in progress early in the season, is added as an annual event

  • Choir reaches out to male choristers with the addition of Boys Only! and Boys to Men Workshops

  • Choir wins first place at Tennessee’s Fiesta-Val Choral Competition

  • Choir appears in North Carolina Dance Theatre’s production of Carmina Burana

  • Choir participates in the Niagara International Music Festival in Canada

  • Choir serves as Choir-in Residence for the Choral Music Experience Institute, Elon University

2000 – 2001

  • Membership reaches 175 singers in four ensembles

  • Choir celebrates 15th anniversary with joint holiday concert including the American Boychoir

  • Celebration in Song Summer Choral Festival adds a teacher training event

  • Choir appears at American Choral Director’s Association Southern Division Convention in Orlando

  • Choir wins first place and grand champion at MusicFest Orlando Choral Competition

  • Choir appears with Charlotte Symphony & Oratorio Singers in Carmina Burana

  • North Carolina Summer Institute of Choral Arts selects the Choir as choir-in residence

  • Choir tours France, including a performance at Notre Dame Cathedral

1999 – 2000

  • The Bella Voce Singers, an alumni choir for high school women, premiers

  • Choir performs for the American Choral Director’s Association Southern Division Convention

  • Choir serves as choir-in-residence for the Choral Music Experience Institute at University of South Carolina

  • Choir awarded first place at the national choral competition in Orlando, Florida

  • Presbyterian Hospital sponsors production of CD of lullabies Path to the Moon

  • Choir appears in Magic of Christmas with the Charlotte Symphony

  • Choir members play spirits in Opera Carolina’s production of The Magic Flute

  • Choir takes part in Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC

1998 – 1999

  • Choir appears in Magic of Christmas with the Charlotte Symphony

  • Choir performs Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Charlotte Symphony and the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte

  • Members perform Nutcracker with the North Carolina Dance Theatre

  • Choir earns first place in Princeton Invitational Children’s Choir Festival

  • Choir appears with host Maya Angelou as the birthday of Dr. John Hope Franklin is celebrated

1997 – 1998

  • Role of artistic director becomes full-time

  • Members perform Nutcracker with the North Carolina Dance Theatre

  • Choir takes part in Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC

1996 – 1997

  • Children’s Theatre features choir members in The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree

  • Choir commissions piece by composer Loonis McGlohon

  • Members perform Nutcracker with the North Carolina Dance Theatre

  • Choir travels to American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Convention in Memphis, TN

  • Choir members appear in Opera Carolina’s production of Falstaff

  • Choir records A&E television special with Judy Collins at the Biltmore Estate

1995 – 1996

  • Choir appears in Opera Carolina’s production of Carmen

  • Choir tours New York State and takes part in Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC

1994 – 1995

  • Parent Association established

  • Local performances include Chamber of Commerce, Chrysler Corporation holiday event, United Way campaign kickoff

  • Choir tours Montreal, Canada

1993 – 1994

  • Membership rises to 140 children in three ensembles

  • Choir performs Hansel and Gretel with Opera Carolina

  • Biltmore Estate features choir at holiday candlelight event, establishing an annual tradition

  • Choir tapes  a WTVI television special Spotlight on the Arts with Loonis McGlohon

  • Choir tours North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia

1992 – 1993

  • Arts and Science Council selects the choir as an affiliate and provides a $7,000 basic operating grant

  • Artistic director co-founds the Piedmont Invitational Children’s Choir Festival

  • Choir hosts joint concert with the Charlotte Choirboys and the Montreal School Choir

  • Choir tours Virginia, Washington, DC, New York City (Cathedral of St. John the Divine) and Philadelphia (Independence Hall)

1991 - 1992

  • Participation doubles to 120

  • Sandy Holland joins choir as part time artistic director

  • Executive director role expanded to full time

  • A Children’s Celebration in Song Summer Festival is added as an annual outreach event

  • Choir participates in the Charlotte Choral Society’s Singing Christmas Tree and performs with the renowned American Boychoir

  • Membership returns to approximately 65 in two ensembles

1990 - 1991

  • Choir participation shrinks to 42 before a group of parents organizes and revitalizes the Choir

1989 - 1990

  • Organization incorporates with non-profit status

  • Choir travels to England, touring outside North America for the first time A third ensemble is added, and membership grows to 100

1988 - 1989

  • Membership reaches 88

  • Choir joins the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte in performing Carmina Burana

  • WTVI documentary follows choir on summer tour

1987 – 1988

  • The Choir season includes performances at Duke University Chapel and collaborates with Opera Carolina’s in a performance of Hansel and Gretel.

  • Choir produces a musical version of “Tom Sawyer”

  • Choir travels to Ontario, Canada

1986 – 1987

  • Elizabeth Kimble founds the Queens College Children’s Choir with approximately 70 singers in two ensembles

  • Performs two concerts annually
