Choir Divisions
The Descant Choir (the preparatory choir) is comprised of children between the ages of eight and ten who have demonstrated the ability to match pitch. The children improve their vocal production and performance skills through unison and two-part singing. By learning note reading and basic score reading, the children also gain vocal independence. The Treble Choir (the intermediate choir), is comprised of children between the ages of nine and twelve who have demonstrated the ability to sing in parts. The development of these skills is through the study of score and note reading. The children continue to learn vocal technique as well as performance and sight-reading skills. The Lyric Choir (the upper intermediate choir), includes children who are between the ages of ten and fifteen, who receive intensive instruction in sight-reading and gain proficiency in musical skills. The Lyric Choir’s repertoire is more difficult and challenges the singers to progress quickly. The Lyric Choir performs frequently and often shares performance responsibility with the Concert Choir. The Concert Choir (the advanced choir), includes singers between the ages of eleven and fifteen. Participation in this Choir is based on sight-reading skills, ability to hear additional dissonant harmonies, vocal quality, and experience. Singers must be committed to rehearsal and performance, as this group performs often. Members of the Concert Choir are eligible to participate in national and international tours. The Charlotte Children’s Choir Youth Chorale includes two ensembles: the Bella Voce Singers, comprised of young women in the tenth through twelfth grades, and Cantare, comprised of young men in the eighth through twelfth grades that have experienced, or are experiencing, vocal change. The Youth Chorale provides serious, mature musical study in a choral setting while continuing to nurture and develop leadership skills among its members. These young men and women are committed to the art of choral singing and to achieving the highest level of musicianship. Instruction focuses on advanced vocal techniques as well as performing at an advanced level. |
